Introduction to Tracer for IFC

Process an IFC file to a database

This tutorial reviews how to use the new Tracer IFC export tool which converts IFC files to a database that can connect to Power BI and be used with the Tracer 3D Power BI visual.

Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) are an open model data format supporting Building Information Models. IFC files can be produced using popular BIM authoring applications including Revit, ArchiCAD, Tekla, Vectorworks, Microstation, and more!

  • Learn how to select IFC files and object categories
  • Learn how to export and IFC file to a SQLite database file
  • Learn how to use a Tracer Power BI template to connect to the database.

Batch process IFC models to one database

This tutorial describes the process for batch processing IFC files (‘Industry Foundation Class’) to a database using the Tracer IFC exporter tool. This concept allows users to select multiple IFC files at once and process them into a single database. The user can then use this data to perform analysis across the models.

This tutorial covers:

  • Selecting multiple IFC files
  • Batch processing them to a single database
  • Reviewing the database records

Append IFC data to an existing database

This tutorial shows how Tracer IFC can be used to append data from multiple 3D IFC model files into a single SQLite database. This process allows users to add to an existing database with new model data. The result is a single ‘building information model’ SQLite database for analyzing models together in tools like Microsoft Power BI.

This tutorial demonstrates:

  • How to process IFC files into a single SQLite database.
  • How to connect to the SQLite database.
  • How to use the Tracer 3D Power BI visual to review multiple models.
